HONG KONG SUFFERS FROM RECRUITING AND RETENTION ISSUES

September 9, 2011

Hong Kong’s current human capital trends are causing an increase of recruiting and retention problems.  In a variety of surveys in 2011 on recruiting and retention issues in Hong Kong, executives and employees alike have expressed dissatisfaction with current HR practices.

About 90% of Hong Kong professionals polled by Robert Half International cited concerns over difficulties in recruiting skilled professionals.  Employees, on the other hand, questioned in a different survey, stated that companies needed to offer more benefits to those with overseas experience and provide more flexible work hours as incentives to sign on.

Retention has also been falling.  Employees surveyed complained of poor compensation packages and lack of promotion opportunities as reasons for leaving.  Another important factor is work-life balance.  Hong Kong’s employers are considered one of the most demanding in Asia.  About 80% of Hong Kong employers expect workers to be readily available at all times.  This is compared to the average 40% of employers in other Asian countries.  It is well known that some Hong Kong employees sleep in their offices overnight when requested.
